NHPIN: UPCOMING WORKSHOPS |
First Fall Course Offering:
Reaching All Students in the Mathematics Classroom
The eleven-hour training will consist of two sessions:
Mathematics can be an area of discomfort for some children who have difficulty learning the concepts for a variety of reasons. Research has shown that use of hands-on, concrete materials can help students to conceptualize math concepts for greater understanding. The course was offered first in spring 2010 and again in winter 2011. NHPIN has had numerous requests to present the program again.
Lisa Zack-Swasey, M.Ed., CAGS and Lois Bick A.S. have trained with Mahesh Sharma and have used his techniques successfully for more than ten years. They will address reasons why students have difficulty in mathematics and will demonstrate how the use of manipulatives allows all children to access mathematics curriculum. Hands-on practice will allow participants to use these methods in the classroom the day following the workshop.
Instruction will also include: introducing fractions using paper strips; proper and improper fractions; mixed numbers; fractions/decimals/percents; comparison of fractions; addition and subtraction of fractions; fractions of a set; multiplication and division of fractions; and use of fraction tiles and Cuisenaire rods to reinforce fractions.
The new training will consist of two sessions at 92 Portsmouth Ave. in Exeter, NH
