Reaching All Students in the Mathematics Classroom
Friday, March 30, 2012 - 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 31, 2012 - 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The cost of the 11-hour training is $150.00. The cost of the program includes a Cuisenaire small group set, refreshments, and lunch on Saturday. A letter of attendance will be issued upon completion of the course.
Mathematics can be an area of discomfort for children who have difficulty learning the concepts for a variety of reasons. Research has shown that use of hands on, concrete materials can help students to conceptualize math concepts for greater understanding. The course was offered first in Spring 2012 and again in Winter 2011. NHPIN has had numerous requests to present the program again.
Lisa Zack-Swasey, M.Ed., CAGS and Lois Bick, A.S. have trained with Mahesh Sharma and have used him techniques successfully for more than ten years. They will address reasons why students have difficulty in mathematics and will demonstrate how the use of manipultives allows all children to access mathematics curriculum. Hands-on practice will allow participants to use these methods in the classroom the days following the workshop.
March 30--Addition and subtraction. This workshop will cover visual clusters for developing number sense and the introduction to the use of Cuisenaire rods and base-ten blocks, how to build number sense using rods and using Singapore math techniques, place value, teaching basic addition and subtraction facts (poppers, fast 9s, neighbors, doubles), fact extensions (3 + 4, 30 + 40, 300 + 400), multi-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, addition and subtraction of decimals, and applications in algebra (vertical acceleration).
March 31--Multiplication and Division. Multiplication and division facts, strategies for memorizing facts, fact extensions (3 x 4 = 12, 30 x 4 = 120, 30 x 40 = 1200), multi-digit multiplication and division, using Singapore math to accompany manipulatives, multiplication and division of decimals, square numbers/square root, numbers cubed, applications in algebra.
Instruction will also include: introducing fractions using paper strips; proper and improper fractions; mixed numbers; fractions/decimals/percents; comparison of fractions; addition and subtraction of fractions; fractions of a set; multiplication and division of fractions; and use of fraction tiles and Cuisenaire rods to reinforce fractions.
In Depth Mathematics
Saturday, May 5, 2012 -9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The cost of the 6-hour training is $60.00.
Per request of Participants who completed Reaching All Students Mathematics in 2010 and 2011, Lisa Zack-Swasey and Lois Bick have agreed to offer In-Depth Mathematics. This workshop will provide a more in-depth examination of various mathematical algorithms and vertical acceleration using hands on materials. Specific questions and problem areas will be addressed.
NHPIN will sponsor both of these trainings and Jean Tucker, M.Ed., CCC-SLP will teach the course. The course will be held at the: Resources in Education (formerly Jean C. Tucker Communication & Education Skills) at 92 Portsmouth Avenue, Suite 4, Exeter, New Hampshire 03833.
