Essential Word-Knowledge skills:
Friday, March 16, 2012 - 5:00 pm.to 9:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 17, 2012 - 9:00 am.to 4:00 p.m.
The cost of the 11-hour course is $350.00. The manual is included in the cost of the program.
The objectives of this course are:
- Understanding of the skills which underlie phonemic awareness, orthography, and, therefore, the alphabetic principle;
- Understanding of how, by using phonetic analysis training as well as fluency training (Precision Teaching), students can learn to read the way skilled readers learn, that is, through being able to apply the alphabetic principle efficiently;
- Understanding the importance of being able to use the alphabetic principle (One of the attributes of the English language is that it has so many more words than most other languages. There is no way to teach all of the words skilled readers are able to read; learners must develop the ability to apply the alphabetic principle, thus, becoming skilled readers. When teachers provide children with the phonetic analysis of words that are being learned, teachers are providing the "gift" that talented, skilled readers have.);
- Developing teachers' expertise so that they are able to provide instruction in teaching sight-word vocabulary for reading and spelling and, at the same time, strengthen the underlying alphabetic skills and develop fluency.
